God spoke to me while I kite-surfed.

I'm not typically a sea sports person. But my wife, who was a windsurfer before, encouraged me to go kite-surfing with her while we were in Bali recently. I thought, why not?

The photo shows us happily standing on the beach, but actually kitesurfing is nothing like that. In fact, it's far more breathtaking, intense and fulfilling. I never thought I'd say those things. Just check out the video below on what pro kite-surfing looks like:

Obviously we didn't jump over a ship. But we did get to go out to sea on a little boat, be strapped to a huge kite and then literally slip off the side of the boat into the vast ocean while always keeping our eyes on the kite. And then we worked the wind to surf - or more aptly, to fly. No doubt, we had lots of seawater in our mouths as we were plunged uncontrollably into the water if things didn't go our way. Sometimes the kite fell flat to the water, too.

But if one catches the wind, it was an amazing force of nature to reckon with. The sound of the distant waves, the roar of the wind and the frantic little voice of the instructor - it all told a story. We in Singapore rarely get to interact with nature in such an intimate way. And when I got a chance to do so while I kite-surfed, it revealed many things to me. I felt alive. Here's how God spoke to me.

  • It takes practice to hear the Holy Spirit (the wind).

We took nearly an hour on the beach to learn how to turn the kite left and right without getting it down on the ground. This was a crucial skill that we eventually realised was key out in the ocean. And it is confusing because while I intuitively steered like it was a car steering wheel, one has to in fact steer it like a motorbike handle.

  • The voice of the flesh may seem to know where to guide you, but it's better to count on hearing the Holy Spirit (wind) instead.

While at sea, the instructor (aptly named Froggy) shouted instructions at me from the boat. It didn't help at all, because I could not hear him, and I was so focused on keeping the kite in the air anyway. It was much more effective to feel the wind myself and adjust intuitively.

  • The power of God (nature) is way more than we can ever imagine. If you catch the wind and move with God, you can soar like an eagle.

It was like nothing else on earth when I flew out of the water as the wind pulled me up. I felt I was lifted from the miry clay and into the glorious sun. With God nothing is impossible, and He can redeem a lousy situation or a hopeless mind.

  • Even with the kite is flat on the water, just a little wind can bring it flying up high again.

Seeing the kite fall from the sky into the water was a very depressing thing. In fact, I thought I had to swim all the way to the kite, get the boat to pull it up to the sky again in order for i to fly. But no - just some adjustments from the 'steering' allowed just a tiny bit of the kite to catch the wind. And little by little, the kite picked itself up and was soon strong and mighty in the sky again.

  • Sometimes catching the wind requires going against intuition.

There were times when steering right seemed correct, but the wind actually needed a steer to the left. Hearing the wind (Holy Spirit) requires practice and sometimes it may not make sense to us initially.

  • Nothing much else in the world matters so long as one is in God and God is in you.

Feeling the power of nature made me feel invigorated that the best things in life are free. There's not much else to make one happy - a wonderful wind, the sea and maybe barbecued corn.
